Coronavirus Playlist – Week 9

Some of the restrictions are finally being lifted, and warm weather finally arrives. Could it be that it’s all finally coming together? Here’s what I was listening to this week.

gutterflowerGutterflower – Goo Goo Dolls (2002)

The Goo Goo Dolls were cursed with a terrible name, but made a lot of great music in the 90s and early 00s. The true peak of their career had already passed by the time Gutterflower was released in the spring of 2002, but, there still was a good bit of fanfare since they were one of the largest pop/alternative bands in the world as the 90s came to a close. Their success wasn’t served to them on a silver platter, or by some fluke – they worked for more than a decade on reaching the peak, slowly re-tooling their sound from (bad) glam metal to (underappreciated) college rock and post grunge, before polishing their sound into highly accessible radio ready pop/rock on Dizzy Up the Girl and Gutterflower.

This is one of those times where I feel like I have a lot to say about this band and this album, but can’t quite find the right words to stress its importance to me. One of the most vivid memories from when I first started getting into music in the early 00s is riding around on my razor scooter or bike, with nowhere to go and nowhere to be. The Goo Goo Dolls were the first modern band that I ever really fell head over heels for, and it’s interesting to think about how certain bands can influence you so much during your formative years. I wonder what my life would be like if I had… just listened to some other artist first, or on a different day? Maybe my taste in music would have been completely different.

Third_eye_blind_self_titledThird Eye Blind – Third Eye Blind (1997)

I took a long walk outside for the first time in, well, a long time. There have been nice days this spring, but I don’t think any of us have really been able to enjoy them, myself included. Being thrown into a work-from-home situation has had it’s ups and downs, but one of the hardest things for me has been not having a commute. In normal times, I get a good length walk to and from the office, and I especially enjoy that in the nice weather. But, with my office closed until (at least) the fall, my days of walking to work in the sun aren’t gonna happen, so it’s up to me to get out there. 3 miles, and a lot of Third Eye Blind later, I honestly feel a whole lot better about the state of things in general than I did before. Sure, we have to be more aware of everything now, and no doubt that the world’s still a scary place, but sooner or later, we all gotta get back out there (responsibly).

Summer time and the livin’s easy…well, maybe not so much this year. But, with the recent arrival of warmer weather, I dusted off the ol’ summer playlist, made for cooking yourself in the sun on those hot days.

Listen to it on Spotify here – I’ll be making updates to it often, let me know if you have any suggestions!
